Business in Nature. A New Management Paradigm to Integrate Sustainability into Strategic Processes

23-May-2024 9:20 - 9:50

For many decades, we have been aware that the principles and practices guiding the management and organization of production and consumption activities result in environmental and social externalities. The consequences of these processes are now evident in the climate and resource crises, as well as the growing challenges of inequality. Scientists have introduced new frameworks, such as planetary boundaries and social-ecological systems, to help businesses understand the existence of limits to the use of natural resources. Managers must recognize the features of the new sustainability paradigm and the implications for strategic integration, encompassing both mitigation and adaptation strategies. The keynote will delve into the following insights:
  • A systemic view based on social-ecological systems and complexity;
  • The existence of multiple trade-offs;
  • The challenge of boundaries, as sustainability pressures are largely present along the value chain and beyond direct managerial control.
Several illustrative cases will complement this narrative.
